Is your car ready for Winter? Tips to Winterize your Car

With winter right around the corner, your car is in for the harshness of freezing temperatures, ice and snow. These tips will help your car survive the winter and keep it in top condition. First check your coolant level. If it's low, fill to the recommended level. I actually suggest to get your coolant flushed and changed if your car is over 30,000 miles. Coolant is necessary to keep your engine functioning in below freezing temps.

Next is to check your tire pressure. Cold air is notorious for reducing the pressure levels in your tires. The colder the air, the more the air condenses and reduces tire pressure. Check your car's recommended PSI in your manual.

One tip often overlooked is an ice scraper. There have been countless times I've tried removing ice from the windshield and have cut up my hands trying to use cd cases. The typical ice scraper is about $3.99 and is well worth the investment.

Checking your cars belts is a good idea as well. If your belts are worn or brittle, there is a good chance that they may snap being cold and then getting hot quickly when the engine is fully warmed up.

Having your battery level checked is a must. Most people's car batteries die in the winter. You don't want to be stuck somewhere far from help with a dead battery. Most local shops will check this for free.

Last but not least, have your windshield wipers checked or replaced. Ice takes a toll on wiper blades. Also make sure to fill your windshield wiper fluid with a non-freezing mix.
